Tangerines

Tangerines are a winter holiday favorite, and new varieties now see tangerines readily available in fall and spring. Traditionally, "tangerines" were used to describe any puffy-skinned easy-to-peel citrus that are really "mandarin oranges." Use of the proper names, "tangerines," "mandarin oranges" and "tangelos" has increased as the popularity of this delicious fruit has surged in recent years. Tangerines have less acid than an orange, and are typically smaller, which makes them the perfect school lunch snack!

Splendid kicks off its annual tangerine program towards the end of September with Florida Fallglo variety. High in juice content with plenty of sugar, this unique tasting citrus fruit fits the bill for many retailers looking for a good shelf-filler as most summer crops are already finished. The next variety, "Sunburst"is a bright-orange, flat tangerine. They usually overlap the Fallglos with availability starting the middle of October. This great looking tangerine usually lasts into early Dec. Our final variety is the Honey Tangerine formally known as the Murcott. Without a doubt, this is the best eating citrus fruit on the market. We generally have these available from January thru April. This "zipper skin" piece of fruit is excellent for the shelf and especially for juicing. Call JB for details, (650) 342-4525.

Buying Tips

Tangerines should be heavy in size and be deep orange in color. Look for smooth skin that is free of soft spots.
